Adapt and Overcome

“…I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.”

-Matthew 17:20

Matthew has officially been referred to the transplant team.Hooray!!  His first appointment got postponed because the case worker had an emergency meeting. I guess I should have expected that though. That is pretty  much how our life has gone. Excited for what is coming but never surprised when it gets pushed back or happens a little differently than what we expected. I have learned to adapt and overcome. It is what you have to do when you have a child like ours. A child with a disease that has no cure. The uncertainty of it all is mind-boggling. I literally just shake me head, give a little shrug and a sigh and move on...

Adapt and overcome.

Since the twins were born, I have not been back to work. My amazing husband has been working triple overtime for the past couple months just to help us save, pay bills, and support our huge family. Unfortunately the State of California thinks he makes a little bit too much money to support our family of 8. About 100 dollars too much. So… instead of helping our family with groceries, the case worker for Department of Public Social Services decides to ring me up and cancel Matthew’s Medi-Cal and Supplemental Care. So our son, who survives off of a machine 4 days a week and needs very expensive medications to stay alive, uses transportation to take him to the Children’s Hospital 4 days a week, lost ALL health coverage. Why?? Because my husband was working so much overtime, he made too much money. $171 over the qualifying limit to receive any kind of support.

Now mind you… before, we lost coverage, we were struggling for groceries. And now… lol… now we have to pay over $65 for two different medications twice a month, I had to pay out of pocket for supplies because Matthew gets fed through a G-Tube and the extra supplies our private insurance doesn’t cover. Now, instead of using transportation to and from the hospital, I have to drive our car 4 times a week. That is $60 for gas three times a week just to get to dialysis.

I was devastated. How can this happen?? What are we going to do? How are we going to survive??

We have been getting by for a month now. It is hard and we have barely seen my husband because he has been working so much. BUT… we have been getting by. One thing I always remind myself of… God always provides. And He does. It has been truly amazing to see how God works. The family and friends who have come and helped us has truly been incredible. I feel so blessed to know we do have people that would do anything and everything to help support our family. I am so grateful.

Adapt and Overcome… that is our life. That is what you learn to do.

Adapt and overcome… because you have to.

Adapt and Overcome… because you need to survive.

Adapt and Overcome… because you CAN!!!

XO
